Middle School Families,

We are off to a great start, and this week has been a reminder about what a great place this is to learn and grow!

Standards Based Grading - We are transitioning to standards-based grading, and our report cards will reflect this change, focusing on assessing students' proficiency in each State Standard rather than traditional letter grades (A, B, C, D, F). This shift provides a clearer picture of what your child has learned and where they may need additional support, setting a stronger foundation for their future academic growth.

Under the SBG system, our grading scale is as follows:

  • 5: Advanced understanding with minimal errors.

  • 4: Proficient understanding with limited errors.

  • 3: Basic or incomplete understanding.

  • 2: Partial success with assistance.

  • 1: No success with assistance.

Cell Phones - Due to changes in North Carolina law surrounding cell phones and other wireless communication devices in schools, our policy has been updated.  Students will continue to turn in their cell phones and smart watches during Advisory.  They will not be able to carry their cell phones on their person or in their backpacks or wear their smart watches, even if they are powered off.  If you are uncomfortable with having your student turn in their cell phone or smart watch every day, we encourage them to keep it at home.

8th Block - In an effort to meet students’ individual needs, we have updated our 8th period block. The class registration is based on your student’s academic needs. Students are placed on different tracks depending on their specific needs. The tracks are as follows.

6th Grade

  • Q1->Q2->Q3->Q4

  • AVID->AVID->AVID->Learning Lab

  • AVID->AVID->PLTW->Learning Lab

  • AVID->Reading/Math Momentum->Reading/Math Momentum->Learning Lab

7th Grade

  • Q1->Q2->Q3->Q4

  • PLTW->Tech Essentials->Service Leadership->Learning Lab

  • Reading/Math Momentum->Reading/Math Momentum->Reading/Math Momentum->Learning Lab

8th Grade

  • Q1->Q2->Q3->Q4

  • PLTW->Financial Literacy->Health Elective->Learning Lab

  • Reading/Math Momentum->Reading/Math Momentum->Reading/Math Momentum->Learning Lab

If your child needs additional support in reading or math, they have been enrolled in a Reading/Math Momentum class. These classes focus on standards recovery and provide targeted instruction tailored to each student’s learning needs.

All students will end the year in a “Learning Lab” where they work on standards recovery, as well as begin to prepare for their end-of-grade testing.  There is further information on the Middle School Website

Arrival/Dismissal - We know that the first few weeks of arrival and dismissal are bumpy and slower than they will be in a few weeks. Thank you for your patience as we get our new 150 families oriented and used to our carline systems and procedures.

North Carolina Individual Student Reports (ISRs) are now available for families in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. These reports include spring testing results for students that were in grades 3-12 during the 24-25 school year, as well as any applicable summer Read to Achieve (RtA) or End-of-Course (EOC) results.

As always, thank you for supporting us and your students. This is going to be a great school year.  If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Ryan Bell or Yvonne Bourque
